The Money Side of Being a Working Artist
My brother interviewed me about being a self-employed artist!
I had the opportunity earlier this month to be featured on my brother’s podcast, Heavy Metal Money, a blog and podcast about personal finance.
We talked about how I:
Transitioned from making no money as an artist to managing legit income
Found (and fired) my first tax preparer and why that mattered
Use QuickBooks Self-Employed and separate my business accounts to stay organized
Set up my SEP IRA and plan for retirement as a self-employed artist
Combat IRS fears with education, community, and the right CPA
Access resources to manage a career as an artist
Talking about the money side of being a working artist can be daunting and a little intimidating. The more we can have conversations, the more we can realize that we don’t have to do it alone. We all have challenges or mistakes, including how I accidently deposited self-employment income into the wrong bank account, and it was my CPA that noticed this issue while we were working on my tax return. I pay people for a reason!
